Thanks everyone for your feedback, I’ve now done 3 gigs with the ukulele club, with another this weekend, so have been busy learning the songs! I’m still learning about what I can do with the electric violin; I’ve discovered it has headphones that I can plug in so I can hear myself over the rest of the group, without needing to put my amp up highe…[Read more]

Hi Kate, this is fab! Your violin sounds great, what make is it? I am thinking of buying an electric for future gigs x

Thanks CB, that’s very kind. I find it a hard song to sing, but I have continued to practice the violin accompaniment and trying to get a bit more relaxed. I’ve had to adjust to the larger size and don’t seem to be squeaking so much on the higher notes. I’m glad I’ve recorded it though, because I can see and hear where I need to improve!

When practicing something difficult, see if you can break it down into a series of small, intermediate steps.
I’ve been learning bluegrass solos from a book by a great fiddler named Annie Staninec. […]

Beautiful sounding fiddle, Jo! It has a deep voice. Reminds me of two old fiddles I found a few years ago. One was German and the other was Czech. Deep throated sound. Can you play the fiddle both left- and right-handed?
Thanks for sharing! Always interested in this journey.

Thanks Carolyn. I’m still trying to work out what is too much, or just enough accompaniment. At the moment I’m just copying from the original, but am getting more confident to deviate a little now and again.

Fantastic, Carolyn! And you’re doing double stops at that speed! Very inspiring challenge – thanks for posting

Well done, Joanne! It’s a very good discipline to practice with the metronome and drum beats. I need to do more of it with the songs I’ve learnt. I seem to get to a certain speed and then everything falls apart!

Thanks Joanne! I’m getting used to it and am still a bit squeaky. I just realised that I made my backing track very loud in comparison, so apologies to listeners for that!

I’ve just bought myself a full size electric violin and am very excited moving up from the 3/4 I’ve been playing. I’ve joined the local ukelele club and have my first public gig with them coming up, so really want to get my accompaniment right. They do their own version of Fisherman’s Blues and I loved the solo that Jason taught, so I thought…[Read more]

Well done James! I need to do a lot more practice. Oh I wish I could do double stops without strangling my fiddle!

Impressive, Jo! What great progress! Thanks for sharing this….it’s so helpful to see how others do this! Just learning to follow that metronome is challenging and you’ve got it!

Tom, those were positively beautiful! Love those laments and those slower, mournful sounding tunes. You are an inspiration!! Loved the medley — some of my most favorite tunes! Thanks again for sharing!

Here’s something fun you can do on the fiddle. Alternate between a constant note and other changing notes, always alternating back to open D. This is called a “pedal pattern”.
Here’s a basic pedal pat […]

Hey @jameseke, good playing. Tone is full and you really hear the melody. It’ll be good to hear progress as you continue to practice this.
