Essential skills for beginner fiddlers

 

Overview

You’re in the right place. In this module, you’ll learn the essential fiddle FUNdamentals—how to hold the instrument and bow, pluck and bow the strings, use your left hand, and start training your ear.

You’ll learn in small steps and gradually combine everything into real music. By the end of the 7-day path, you’ll be playing simple tunes.

No rush. No overwhelm.
Just steady progress and a lot of “oh wow, I’m actually playing” moments. 🐣🎻

In this module you’ll learn how to:

  • pluck and bow the strings

  • place your first fingers

  • learn by ear with call-and-response

  • play simple tunes in small steps

What you’ll learn in the first lesson:

  • Hold the fiddle

  • Pluck the strings

  • Note names

  • Play a rhythm

Practice tips:

  • Take it slow. (This lays groundwork for playing fast later).
  • Practice at least 10 minutes a day, 6 days a week. (Train yourself to be consistent).
  • Repeat one thing instead of rushing ahead. (Master each step).

What will I learn in the “Start Fiddling Now!” module?

Student story: Katrina

This was taken while my husband and I were traveling and camping around New Zealand in February. I take my fiddle everywhere because I want to play every day. As Fiddlehed is online, it doesn’t matter where I am, I have access to the music lessons.

I only started playing fiddle last year. The FiddleHed method of teaching and online resources have helped me develop my ear and attitude to learning. It got me through the excruciating beginner sound.

I’m able to play all the songs from memory, which is so much better than relying on sheet music. I truly didn’t realize that this was possible. I still have a long way to go, but you make that journey fun, and attainable. I couldn’t believe it the other day when I was playing the G scale along to the G drone, then suddenly found myself transposing songs from other keys into G.
