Playing on the open strings is your magical amulet for more fun and productive sessions. Do this at the start, middle and end of a practice period. It’s a way for the mind and body to relax and reset.

Here’s a question I hear all the time: “How do I play faster?”

It may take time to ramp up your speed, but you can do it. Go into this with the right mindset: work at your edge. Don’t worry if you can’t […]

      J,
Thank you–I never could get “up to speed” but I’m going to follow your approach, and I appreciate it your suggestions. I got to start using my metronome. I also got to start writing my progress down.

A good rule of thumb is to play everything at a medium speed, then a slow speed, then your fastest speed and then ending on a medium speed.

An easy way to remember this is that you make a Tempo Sandwich. […]

Thanks Marg and Joanne for your feedback. Always so much to improve on, bowing continues to be a big one for me, so really working on it. For some reason my comments never get posted so hopefully this gets through!

I’ve been trying to improve my tone. I felt that my left hand has been very muddy, so wanted to some how make it sing. I’ve been doing a lot of vibrato practice, looking at a range of YouTube techniques, mainly arm vibrato. Jason’s songs are always so tuneful, so I’ve been listening a lot to how he does his notes a…[Read more]

Strum Machine has a subscription cost but it’s not much I don’t think. Plays background to lots and lots of tune.

Great work, Great improvement on your tone and playing the notes fully. That’s what I love about videos everyone posts after a focus on practising. It’s inspiring. Thanks for posting.

After being away recouping from surgery and physical restriction –

Reviewed tunes I had learned earlier – Rd to Lisdonverna, Sweet Beulah Land, Swallowtail Jig, Southwind, Soldier’s Joy – Level 2.
Enjoyed flipping through Jason’s Fiddlehed Tune Book and just playing again.

Want to establish a practice routine (which will be fun) to include new…[Read more]

Well done, Mary! That was a great effort and I reckon you’ve improved so much from when you first posted. I get terrified by public performances and shake so much that I couldn’t do a solo like that.
