Michael G replied to the topic Strings in the forum All about fiddles 10 months, 2 weeks ago

On a related note, I was reading a blog that mentioned a ‘non-whistling E’ string which I found intriguing. A quick search brought me here: https://www.juststrings.com/dad-ks311w-4-4m.html. It’s also an aluminum wound string.

I struggle getting a nice round tone from my E string so I gave this a try, and it definitely improved the tone on my E.…[Read more]

The Chinese stringed instrument industry is getting better and better. Seems you had a similar shopping experience to me. It’s good you got a chance to play many fiddles and pick the one that spoke to you. Congrats on your new fiddle and the inspiration it brings you.

I like your description of how you listen to the chord changes in music as stories, Mel. It’s an apt analogy. That’s awesome, Joanne. I especially like that you played it on an instrument that would have been perfectly at home in the movie….

I love the Breton Gavotte, and you are playing it really well. I haven’t worked on the octave lower version – or the embellishments you’ve added. You’ve inspired me. And your Swallowtail Jig is really excellent. Great job!

Man, this is a tough one. But I have been working on it for a week or so and will keep working on this one. I feel like working on this one to smooth it out, improve the intonation, and get the bowing nice and loose will push me forward on the path. Fiddling is like whack-a-mole. You work on intonation and tone falls apart. You work on tone and…[Read more]

Thank you, Marg! I try to focus on the positives, but my inner critic is extremely noisy. Jason does such a good job hammering home the message of celebrating small wins. I know my intonation has improved markedly since I began this journey. Some days are better than others….

Thanks, Debbie. All I hear when I listen to myself is my lousy intonation lol.

Really, really nice – great rhythmic feel throughout, and the cuts sound nice and musical. Awesome stuff. I gotta go practice now – you’re inspiring me.

That sounds so great, Debbie. Intonation, double stops, and the lilting feel of your swinging 8th notes. Great job!

Just learned it this morning. I have been practicing my sight reading (on mandolin so that my brain isn’t worrying about bowing technique). My improvement in sight reading is allowing me to learn melodies much more quickly.
