What a beautiful tone and feel you have in your playing Kevin. This tune has me intrigued now, I’m going to look it up. Jason’s comments are helpful to all of us so thanks for letting us in on the feedback.

Nice one Deb, you must have a good ear to work that out. Great double stops!

Wow, looks like some pretty complicated techniques there Owen, great work. It’s inspiring to see fiddleheds going beyond single line melodies. Makes me realise I should step out of my own comfort zone, ๐

Really enjoyed your video of Old Joe Clarke Keith, and very impressed with the fast tempo! Looked like you had fun playing along with the backing track too. Jocelyn’s feedback was so interesting to watch, and we all get to learn from her focus on bowing just like a master-class. Thanks for posting. 😀

Oh, that was so beautiful Garrison, very tender, no wonder your baby was cooing along. You seem to have a natural feel for the music and the fiddle, very inspiring. Thanks for posting. ๐

That’s a really nice, soulful version Owen, and beautifully played. It’s exciting to see and hear how everyone’s progressing. Sometimes hard to hear in our own day to day practice, but really noticeable when people post now and again. ๐

Thanks for sharing your video James, you have a nice sensitive tone in your playing. I learnt some things from Jocelyn’s feedback too, like feeling the hand shape in those 2 stretches and 1 close interval. Being reminded to use drones for more than scales alone was good too.
Do you play fiddle with other musicians as well? I wrote 2nd fiddle and…[Read more] -

This sounds great Jason, amazing what you can do with one voice, one fiddle and one drone. Thanks for the clear explanations and break down on how you work on each aspect of the song, backing and riffs. Please keep posting these videos, we’re learning so much from you.

This was so interesting Jason, I learnt a lot from you explaining your creative process. The listening, finding the triads for the intro, chord back up rhythms, descending bass line, slides. All the building blocks we can play with to make a song backing. Thanks for another great lesson!

Owen, I’m sorry I haven’t replied to your question earlier, I’ve been called on to do Grandma duties a couple of times in the last 2 months and that means traveling 1,000klms to get there each time and staying for a bit. Yes it is the same tune as Shady Grove and can be played so many different ways, it’s one of my favourites.

That was great Owen, and I could hear your accents. I don’t know how it is for others, but I find I have to practise a new tune a lot and get to know it well and then the accents seem to come through naturally. Having said that though, the fiddle is a hard taskmaster with it’s intricate bowing. Thanks for sharing, it’s inspiring to see how…[Read more]
