Wow, that’s a strong sound you have there James, great playing! You’re inspiring us all to work on our double stops, I really struggle with them.I like how you play them and keep the flow of the tune going, that must have taken a lot of practice.:)

Great job Deb! I’m really impressed with how you maintain a consistent pressure on the bow playing long notes. That can be really hard to do, but your notes stayed sweet from one end of the bow to the other.:)

Rita, I finished watching your band’s concert video. So polished, you must all have worked very hard to put that together. Beautiful vocal harmonies, what a great thing to be able to sing so well. I think that would be very helpful for audiation as a fiddle player.
I hope the Oyster Crackers will soon be able to do live gigs again, I’m not sure of…[Read more] -

That was great Michael, we can see all the work you’ve done, there’s a lot to pull together and you’re doing it really well! Yep, we can all relate to the co-ordination of technical challenges you mentioned, but isn’t it such a good feeling when things come together? Then there’s the next new thing to layer in, or the next new tune, it’s always…[Read more]

Thanks Kate, I was very nervous relying on my memory and hoping I could move through the variations smoothly. I can’t take credit for the ideas, they were from Jason’s Practice Journey replay, but I did enjoy the challenge! That’s great that you have Strum Machine now, it’s saved a lot of time for me, as I used to make all my own backings with…[Read more]

Hi Rita,
I’m away for a few days too, for my Grandaughter’s birthday. I’ve managed to watch a little of your concert on YouTube so far and looking forward to watching more. Thanks for sending info about it. -

Thanks Owen, yes the swaying came naturally once I eventually relaxed. I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone to make these videos, but I know they’re a good tool for our practice.

Rita,I just noticed that you wrote this tune, and harmonies too! It would be lovely to see a video of the Oyster Catchers playing it. I have a deep interest in ensemble music, have written some harmonies for a composer of folk tunes, these were published in her book. Also arranged one of them as a classical guitar solo, but I would love to write…[Read more]

This is my ‘end of the Spring Practice Challenge” video. I was inspired by Jason’s Practice Journey on Breton Gavotte and had already started to work on it. He had some great suggestions to expand on the tune, so I thought I’d experiment with these ideas and try to string them together. It’s still a work in progress, I think I managed to pull…[Read more]

Wow, that is such a lovely tune Rita and played beautifully, nice vibrato. You seem right at home on the fiddle, have you been playing a long time?

Beautiful playing Sally, you have a nice rich tone there.
I think we would all agree that recording ourselves is confronting, but you did a great job. It’s so encouraging to know that there are others out there who are doing the same thing and we’re all learning and challenging ourselves together. 🙂 -
