Man, this is a tough one. But I have been working on it for a week or so and will keep working on this one. I feel like working on this one to smooth it out, improve the intonation, and get the bowing nice and loose will push me forward on the path. Fiddling is like whack-a-mole. You work on intonation and tone falls apart. You work on tone and…[Read more]

Also was that strum machine that you used as a back up or another app? Also, if it is strum machine, how did you get the different strumming?

Well done. I think the most important thing I’ve learnt at Fiddlehed is to learn the songs by memory. It’s a gift that keeps giving, makes it easier to transpose songs into other keys and much better at recovering from missed notes. I never thought it would be possible, but so glad that I have a songbook in my head that I’ve been able to pull…[Read more]

Great stuff, Marg! Awesome variation and I love your transition to Swallow tail jig. I have downloaded the strum machine app I was so inspired. I want to develop a set of songs to play and thought it was a good way to practise. (But I can’t work out how to add the mandolin yet. I’ve ticked the box but it just sounds like guitar to me.) Love tha…[Read more]

Hi Rita,
I’m away for a few days too, for my Grandaughter’s birthday. I’ve managed to watch a little of your concert on YouTube so far and looking forward to watching more. Thanks for sending info about it. -

I am ready to start paying the $39 per month to get access to FiddleHed lessons. I’d like to select the ones I think I need, and go at my own pace. i am 93 years old and used to play the violin. I can’t see how to do that form the information presented as my trial subscription runs out. It wants me to set up goals, records of accomplishments, and “I-don’t-know-what-else.”
Please let me know how I can do it in this way, if that is possible. I like your method of breaking the elements of violin playing into small pieces that can be practiced separately.

Hope you received a reply and are giving this a go Mr Crook! My understanding is you can indeed roam across the site and take your own approach with the direction if that suits you better. Wish you every good luck in returning to the violin, hope this endeavour brings you much pleasure.

Good morning Marge, I am out of town, but can certainly send you a recording of the song by the Oyster Crackers. We have a CD and it is all original songs written by myself and Bette Lu Krause (one of the guitarists in our band). We also did a live stream concert during COVID at the Columbia Theatre in Longview, WA. It is on YouTube, and we did…[Read more]

Thanks Owen, yes the swaying came naturally once I eventually relaxed. I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone to make these videos, but I know they’re a good tool for our practice.

Rita,I just noticed that you wrote this tune, and harmonies too! It would be lovely to see a video of the Oyster Catchers playing it. I have a deep interest in ensemble music, have written some harmonies for a composer of folk tunes, these were published in her book. Also arranged one of them as a classical guitar solo, but I would love to write…[Read more]
