Hi Magpie, no I’ll have to check out the Mystery tune when I have time. Going camping for the rest of this week. I really should try to join the zoom lessons – except it would be 4.30am our time I think, and I’m not that much of an early bird! Definitely think I should get one of those guides if you think it is helping you.

Yes Mike, and I’m impressed with people who don’t need to read music to play. I think you’re right to want to stick to the fun of just playing. I’m really trying to just learn the songs so I can play anytime, anywhere, and not have to have the music in front of me.
And for anyone who is interested in using my sheet as a practice prompt, I’ve ju…[Read more]

Fantastic, Leanna! That sounded great – perfect pace and tone. It really is worth learning a song well. Also love the sound of your fiddle.

Thanks, Mike. Never say never though! I have improved in my ability to read music notation since starting this course.
But I’m only doing this for songs I have learnt and know how to play all the way through without the music – it’s just that as I learn more and more songs the recall of the tunes I’ve learnt a while back is slower. I need a trigg…[Read more] -

Hi Maggie, thanks for the link for the bowing aid. I’m interested in you’re finding it, and if you feel a difference in your bowing because of it. I definitely need to improve my boing technique – I feel I need specific guidance on how to do the wrist bend because how I hold the bow looks so wooden compared to others how have an elegantly bendy wrist.

Thank you, Cindy! It was me singing, with the auto correct tuning working at full throttle! I’m blown away at all the things you can do on garage band now. I’m still a bit hesitant improvising, but it’s a good way to practice it.

My practice challenge goal was to review and ‘fingerprint’ songs I’ve learnt on my Fiddlehed journey so I can play them without the music. As I am progressing through the intermediate course and learning new songs, the old ones get forgotten – but as soon as I hear or start to play them I can usually play them all t…[Read more]

Yes indeed, Joanne, You were one of the one’s who inspired me! The next thing I need to challenge myself is to attempt back up chords on the violin.
And Magpie, I’ve just created a fingerprint challenge that I will post somewhere when I work out how. -

Thanks very much for sharing, Tom. Nice song, is that a Fiddlehed song? Great video affects too. Very inspiring how you layered it. Thanks explaining how you did it.

Hi Kaz, Great to hear you’re playing everyday. I’m doing the practice challenge and aim to ‘fingerprint’ songs as Jason calls it, so I can play them from memory. I’m still learning how to play basic chords and should practice that more! I’ve also just discovered garage band and am having fun making some accompaniment tracks to play along with.…[Read more]

I’ve been inspired by many of you recording your own chord and harmony accompaniments and decided to have a go with Garage Band. Stayed up till 2am working out how to do it so it’s a bit rough. I tried to improvise a light accompaniment for the verse and chorus, and then do the Ketch Secour instrumental breaks. Gre…[Read more]

That was fun! Light and tuneful. How about you record a chord back up for it then play it over the top?

Thanks Magpie, I will check out that link. For some reason my posts are not posting, so hope this one gets through! I haven’t been playing because I broke a string and it took ages to get a replacement by mail. Hope you weren’t affected by the earthquake – Victoria needs a break!

Yes, I do have the BB and stolen songbook, but it’s sitting at home in QLD at the moment. You must be missing your weekly group – it must be a lot of fun playing with them with such a great combination of instruments. How do you go on zoom? I have such difficulty with normal meetings where people talk and there is that slight delay. How do you p…[Read more]
