I’m a scaleaholic!! I play scales before
anything else is played.
When learning a song I play a line or two then play the related scale with rhythm and different bowing. I practice major, minor and love pentatonics and the blues scale!!!
I also play triads G up to E and back. I have not worked as much as I should with modes but that is a goal -

As for myself, I practice scales for tunes I’m working on.
I still practice the pentatonic a lot, adding different types of variation.

Do you practice scales?
If so, how?
What’s your relationship with scales?
Are they fun, horrible or neutral.Do you use scale books?
How about the scale lessons in the FiddleHed course?
Or Scale Central? https://fiddlehed.com/practice-tools/scale-central/
Let me know!!

Over the past month I’ve been diving into practicing some rhythm and bowing patterns
I practiced the shuffle bowing on Shortnin’bread which was really fun to do
I tried Jig and Reel rhythm for Palm Sunday and Drowsie Maggie
Now I am looking for some playable ornaments for Si bgeag si mhor, which is an Irish tune.
I am also working on Bla…[Read more] -

I would love to see the slur patterns people use for this song. I know it’s personal preference but as a beginner it really helps me to see it. I am a note reader by the way. I tried some slur patterns but I think it could be improved. I also like to have bowing marked as it helps me learn the tune too.

Very nice, Ann. Clear notes and as Joanne says, a nice swing to it.

Agreed, that was a great creation 👏🏼
Also be interested to hear a bit of your process for this, Debbie.
I like when harmony parts meet the melody at various parts of song, as you did. Inspiring! -

I’m working on my own version of this tune to make it sound less fiddly & more like a mooching/strutting cat, inspired by the memories of my own (not grey) moggies & I think, subconsciously on listening back, by “Minnie The Moocher” by Cab Calloway & maybe a bit of the cartoon cat Sylvester!

I do keep a journal using lists in columns with comments. Some days are discouraging and some are just winners! My fiddle group meets weekly on Zoom where we play something each week for the group. When possible, some of us play chords (on mute) with the fiddler.
For March, I set the following goals:
1. Review and practice a fiddle set…[Read more] -

ha-ha, in contrast to the previous lists, I have been focusing on learning ONE tune-probably took me the longest of any tune so far, and still working on the double stops:
Cajun Fiddle
After working hard on that, then I just play various tunes I know by heart for a reward! -
