Jim Guinn started the topic It's Practice Season in the forum Chatting On The Porch 5 months, 3 weeks ago

It’s practice season. As the weather begins to turn to Fall/Winter, I will begin my practicing again on a regular basis. I’ve been “playing” for almost 4 years but have had many “starts” and “stops” to my fiddling, especially seasonal (and some severe shoulder problems). I am pretty good about practicing once the weather turns cold (mainly because…[Read more]

Hey Aywren. I think I replied to you privately, but I am not sure it went through, so I will post my response here again.

So good to hear from you! Jason asked me about writing for Fiddlehed again, and I accepted his offer. My fiddling has been almost non-existent for the past year because of severe shoulder problems. I practice when I can, but…[Read more]

      Hi Peter,

Of the 3 bows I own, my Incredibow is my favorite. For me, it is just easier to play with it. I have experimented with going back to my other bows, but I keep coming back to my Incredibow.

If you have a Facebook account, check out Brett Dudenhoeffer. He plays exclusively with an Incredibow.

Hi Nick…I have a large monitor and I sit when practicing, so my monitor is right at eye level.

I can’t remember where I found this tab idea, but I like it much better than the way Jason writes out the tabs exactly for the reason you mentioned, “really helps to see the patterns in the music.”

Beautiful piece! I never knew there was such a foot…[Read more]

Hi Nick. That’s the first thing I thought when I first found it…such a big price tag for such a small tool. I paid $20 USD for mine, but I have had it almost 2 years and it should last 2 more, at least, so it’s been worth it, and it clans the strings better than just using a cloth.

To add an image, you have to find the image you want online.…[Read more]

Jim Guinn replied to the topic Filing Music For Practice in the forum Practice Questions 2 years ago

I sometimes use my music stand, and it is also covered with papers that I have to sift through if I need to look at a particular tune.

I practice in my office at home, and a lot of times, I don’t use my music stand. Instead, I use my computer. I have all my music saved alphabetically in a folder in pdf format. I just click on the tune I want and…[Read more]

As far as a lot of rosin, I have read everything from “laziness” to “reverse snobbery” to “custom, style and the wish for a certain sound.”

Early on, I found a very helpful little tool that cleans the strings and fingerboard at the same time. It’s called simply “The String Cleaner” that I bought at…[Read more]
