It will come when the hand memorizes where it is supposed to be in relation to the fiddle. My palm touches the body of the fiddle and that feeling is how I know where I am.
Also doing one finger scales helps teach the hand and ear. You can just do open, first finger, move first to where 2nd would fall, move 1st to where 3rd would fall (if were…[Read more]

That’s been happening to me too. So I’m learning to check in with my box elbow and see if it is too high for the string I am on. I also heard one teacher say to aim for the back of the left foot. I think that was meaning that perfectly straight bow might mean the arm is different ( has a different aim/angle) on the lower strings vs. the higher…[Read more]

Now the wedding is over , I can tell my body is tired, so I’ll be practicing with my ears for a bit and not with the fiddle.

Maybe you can hold the violin “guitar style” and pluck the strings. Can you use your left hand at all? This way you can work on fingering and tunes. Using a keyboard will help you to learn to hear pitches and rhythms. You can memorize tunes from a keyboard too. You will be practicing everything but muscle memory on the fiddle.
Reading the…[Read more]

I think it’s totally up to you or whoever is taking the lead with the group. I’ve been around a group that requires excessive amounts of hard alcohol and around folks who just show for the music time. I’ve been to a person’s home and seen them hosted at a bar or coffee shop or restaurant or a campground/park. They are doing one here at a park…[Read more]

Kvmceff replied to the topic Does size really matter? in the forum Chatting On The Porch 7 months, 2 weeks ago
Fiddles are all different so to play a different fiddle you do different things. Some are wider or longer or the strings are higher from the fingerboard – by itty teeny amounts. Your body will adjust to this, but it needs some time to make the adjustment. Using a fiddle that is so much different will take so much more adjustment. As a beginner…[Read more]

My cousin was allowed to photograph the Amati 1649 and the Strad 1716 in person as part of a project to republish the book about Amati, in 1984. That was picked up by the car company that released an ‘Amati’, around 1991. Just some added trivia. Thanks for your work.

Kelly, Gosh it sounds really great to me. What I do notice is your left hand seems tense and your wrist looks like it is a tad kinked. Now that could be the angle of the camera, but I am thinking your elbow is the issue. Try this with your elbow a tad more under the violin and not as close to your body. Let your arm hang loosely with your…[Read more]

If you enjoy your instrument you will play more. If might just be a change not necessarily an upgrade. I will say that a ‘better’ instrument can be easier to play. As for the brilliant sound you are experiencing from the current strings. You could try different strings. Check out the chart at Shar Music which rates them Subtle to Direct and…[Read more]

Kvmceff replied to the topic Did you get any fiddle-y Christmas gifts? in the forum Chatting On The Porch 1 year, 2 months ago
My brother made it a violin-themed Christmas. I received a cute fiddle wooden pendent, a ‘Violin, Treble Maker’ tote, an art deco print of a violinist and “Violin Mastery: interviews with Heifetz etc”, edited by Martens.

Yes Pirastro is notorious for short life. There has to be something else that will fit! Keep looking. I suggest a peak at Joy Lee’s video on string choices. I think she did a nice job with her information.
Using pencil on the bridge and the nut slots is a good practice every time you change strings. As is giving the finger board a good scrub…[Read more]

Sounds good and the finger motion is spot on. Working to keep the wrist in the ‘normal’ playing space/plane is the next step. Right now you have an extra motion to tense the wrist and bend it. It’s all part of the learning process. Keep the wrist relaxed and you are there!!
