Have you been playing for a while and noticed that the hair on your bow has a case of “bed head” and isn’t quite falling into line anymore? Or maybe a bow was gifted to you, but the hair has more gaps than […]

    Good bow sound Charles!

Just curious: the fiddle sounds like it’s tuned low. Is that so? If not intended, you might want to check the tuning with an electronic tuner.

    keep on keeping’ on…

    Hey Charles,

Stick with comments from other learning fiddler’s! Not bad at all, and smooth bowing for such a beginner. I think you are going to be quite good! It’s your journey, enjoy it; practice often and video once per month, sounds great!!

Nicely done, Mary. I enjoyed that. Wished I had the dexterity in my fingers that you do.

LOL, Tom. I have been humming (and playing) Shenandoah for the past few days since Jason posted his lesson. I also agree, I have to really like a tune, and that makes it easier to learn and memorize.

Singing the words can be a big help in learning a tune. I learn some songs by heart and then move on. Some I learn some of and come back to. Usually, what ever I feel like doing. No rules about this. Then, there are those I forget and have to come back to!

First time I have stumbled across this thread. I first picked up my fiddle 2 years ago this month, but still consider myself very much a beginner, as my practicing is very sporadic because of chronic shoulder problems. I may go weeks without playing. I used to find this very discouraging and I would really get down about it until I realized that…[Read more]

Nice @tszalay. I was going to teach the lower octave but got side-tracked with Irish embellishment.

The video looks great. What camera did you use?

    Hey Tom,

Way to jump right in! Playing in the lower octave G Scale is not easy; lots of third finger stretching. Very well done!

Thank you, Mark. Brilliant would be the last word I’d ever use to describe my playing….but, I would call my desire to play quite high. A couple of years ago, with very limited talent, or bravery, I walked into a brewery where a fiddle jam was proceeding and managed to have a good time playing some simply back-up chords to some bluegrass tunes…[Read more]
