My first night at the local Spelmanslag. I’m not sure if this got posted. A tune I should know well, albeit with my own arrangement through years of playing by memory. Well the group came out of the gates like a thoroughbred racehorse, I came out like a drunken sailer after last call.

Frustration in the forum Beginner Group 1 year, 6 months agoI seem to have hit yet another wall. I’m trying to learn a few new tunes to join a local jam and after almost a year I have only accomplished learning 6, and not very well at that. I have been ignoring any other tune and trying to stay focused. Granted my practice has taken little holidays but I have been more consistent and regular about practice…[Read more]

Got this one down during the group practice. Gotta watch those bow directions and be mindful of the notes. My mind wants me running off somewhere else.

Want to post a progress video.
Not getting as much organized practice as I do like, but it is improving both in time and organizing -

I do use Muse, but also just try to keep it note for note. Playing with a group I’m trying to keep it in the same key and I don’t know how otherwise. Muse can bounce the key around. The group leader has been tossing me a few scores that she arranged for the viola which I love.

That was great yesterday with the Wellerman. Playing in a different key made it hard for play and respond. But that’s on me. I’m still working on cleaning up Josefins, dopval, Halsa dem Darhemma and Ganglat fran Appelbo and will be adding Visa Vid Vindens Angar and Dansen Ungdom once I can get them transcribed to Alto.
Cheers

This tune came up in conversation in regards to how ants on the page scare me. However, I can learn it by ear and follow it on the sheet nonetheless. Go figure. It’s been several years since I’ve played this, so I was pleased I could pull it off.

This one is even painful for me to watch, but less poker face, and in all honesty, the first time I very really tried to play it. I’v Been listening to it for a few months here and there… Let me know what you think. I will post updates as I improve. Perhaps even one playing in the Spelmanslag.

Thanks, Owen, I have been listening to a couple of dozen new tunes I need to learn to play in the group. I worked on this one using sheet music in chunks, mostly to get the slurs down. I was struggling until I hit the right pattern on the first few triplets, then it fell together. I gotta get rid of that poker face, I most definitely have a good…[Read more]

Thank you. This is one of the many new tunes I’m trying to learn so I can play with my local Spelmanslag. Composer Roger Tallroth is a Swede and I have heard him the the band Vรคsen a couple of times. He composed this song to the christening of his niece Josefine (“dopvals” means “christening waltz”).

Thanks, I should correct my thread heading. “La Danse de Mardi Gras”
Song by The Balfa Brothers. And my apologies for digressing from the original score. -

I know I recorded this last year after learning it at 20d. Pretty scratchy as I really haven’t played it much since.

My first “Jam”. Granted I barely got through scratching out a few chords. Trying to get this waltz under my belt. Recorded so I could use the sound clip to practice.
