Well done, Mary. It’s a lovely tune and got my fiddle out to play along. Have to say I love your grimaces when you play – I do them too. I try really hard not to frown or twitch, but my concentration when I play takes over my face. I need Jason to do a lesson on how to do a ‘happy fiddle face’!

It was well done! I’m really impressed and a bit envious of your pinkie. Mine crooks the wrong way so I have to shift to get the note I want and then when I resume my others I’m out of position. I’m working on that — you make it look so easy.

I agree with MoonShadows… The tunes I really like are easy to learn and memorize. Once memorized, they are easier to improve on as I can concentrate on technique and form without having to glance at the music while I play. Lyrics can make it easier, but if I really like a tune, I find myself humming it throughout the day while learning it, which…[Read more]

Hi there fellow fiddlers. I am wondering if you try to learn each tune by heart before moving on. I am finding Angeline the Baker is taking forever- maybe I need to find the words to the song so that I can sing it too. I really didn’t like the tune to start with but it is growing on me now! How are you doing withthings like making sure that you…[Read more]

Hi Barbara. I tried to reply to this a few days ago but for some reason it didn’t post. I don’t learn pieces by heart before going to another. Lots of them I use for…

Hey Tom, I’ve been a FiddleHed for about 8 1/2 months. I’ve actually been in group lessons and breakouts with you, including today’s great Hector the Hero lesson and the breakout room with you and Jill! My FiddleHed name (cbFidHed2020) and Zoom name (“Patchy-Intermediate Lapsed Childhood Violinist”) were different, so you may not have realized.…[Read more]

Thanks. The H3 finger reach on G and D strings is quite a stretch, especially the opening two notes, going straight up from G1 to GH3, while trying to keep the G1 still in place for a couple notes later!

I used the selfie camera on my 4-year-old Samsung S7 cell phone, set on a music stand, uploaded straight from the phone to YouTube. No tweaking…[Read more]

Nice @tszalay. I was going to teach the lower octave but got side-tracked with Irish embellishment.

The video looks great. What camera did you use?

          Hey Tom,

Way to jump right in! Playing in the lower octave G Scale is not easy; lots of third finger stretching. Very well done!

Hey, Tom – that’s a great first video! I’m way off that.

I like the variations, and ‘Hector’ is such a great tune. Definitely on my list when I get better at bowing.

Well, I thought I would jump on board and try my first video upload to the Fiddlehed site. Here are three versions of Hector the Hero, in preparation for Online Lessons tomorrow: A-Major in lower octave (a bit rough – just started today); In upper octave (as taught in Fidlehed basic version); and upper octave with variations.
