Hey there, Santa here filling in for Mr. FiddleHed for the fiddle lesson today. I’ll show you how to play You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch. It’s true that Mr. Grinch made Santa VERY ANGRY by committing a flagrant act of IDENTITY THEFT and stealing all the presents in Whoville. Spoiler alert: even the Grinch has a heart and is able to feel the great spirit of Christmas.
But enough about sports! The version I’ll teach is based on the vocal melody sung by Thurl Ravenscroft in the original animated movie. How’s that for a cool name: Thurl Ravenscroft?!

Cool, now that you’ve heard the whole tune, let’s learn how to play it…

First, start by singing the melody to the song if you know it.

You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch
You really are a heel
You’re as cuddly as a cactus
You’re as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch!

If you can hear the melody clearly in your head it will be much easier to learn and play it in tune. This is part of the process of Audiation, which is a lesson in the How To Play In Tune mini-course.
