      hi

I’m new to Fiddlehed but I’ve started at lesson 1.6 as I’ve had lessons for 3 months and it felt comfortable.

I don’t want to be practising too many tunes at once and never get good at any of them. if I’m working of the tunes in that weeks lesson is it ok to me working on something else as well? I’m currently working on Amazing Grace and have a couple others I want to start.

I’m thinking work on the tunes for lesson plus one of mine each week

Also do i just work on that weeks tune for the week its in lesson then move to next one or keep doing both

Hi Stella, great points and topic for discussion. Glad your involving FiddleHed in with your music journey!
I suggest checking out the ‘Support’ tab, and specifically ‘Fiddle Questions’ and check out the drop down topics ‘Practice’ and ‘Learning Tunes’ sections.
Here’s the link for easy reference:

      Fiddle Questions

My experience with amount of tunes to approach tends to come back to less tunes at a time being best. Focus in thoroughly with 1 tune at at time, with intention to master the tune. Take a break from that tune as necessary, and return to it when possible. Implementing other songs into the mix for a break, for fun, for interest, etc is also good.
I tend to at times focus on a key and scales associated with that key instead of working on any tunes, and inevitably that will support all tunes in that key.

Let’s keep talking about this. Be interested to hear how this progresses for you.
      Thanks for creating this post!

      Hi Jocelyn

My current practise it for example, I’m currently doing week 1 of 1.8

Mon I did low finger and reviewed bile em cabbage and joy to the world
Tues I leaned Shady grove but warmed up with Mondays lesson
We’d I did warmup including redoing lesson on low finger, slur 3 lesson shady grove
      Thur I didn’t practice
Fri I did a warmup including low finger and slur 3 and redid lesson on shady grove then redid lesson on joy to the world and bile em cabbage.
Tomorrow I’ll do same as today but review older tunes

This seems to be about my brains limit. I have other tunes I want to learn but I’m not sure how to fit them, I was thinking a second session a day just focussing on one other tune maybe.

So far I’ve found when I try to learn other tunes they don’t go well as they aren’t fiddlehead tutorials and I just seem to get a lot of scratching

Hi Stella, great recap of your practice week, thanks for sharing this 🙂

You seem to be moving at a fairly brisk tempo through the module pages, and there are a lot of songs within each lesson! I understand it can feel like a lot to manage/focus on.
I would take note of the songs I am interested in learning, have a list of them somewhere, and note their timing/key/approx skill level, and approach them when you feel ready to approach it.
As for the songs within the modules, good to also go into more depth with 1 song you are most drawn to currently, and work towards mastering each part of it.
A second practice session could be an interesting thing to try. It could be good to try and relate what is being practiced with the program to another song one is wanting to learn (same key, similar skill level, similar time signature) to help it be easier to approach.

Reviewing songs you have learned well is always a good break and alternation from learning new content.

Have you checked out the Play Every Day App yet? It sounds like there’s some great exchanges going on there with sharing practising and gleaning from each others’ sharings.

        Ah yes, great points Stella.

As for determining the skill of a song, mainly the amount of notes in a song, especially faster notes as well as more technical note rhythm patterns, can be some determining factors in difficulty. Same with the key the song is in (depending what keys one is more familiar with). Jason has the modules ordered fairly well in regards to song difficulty and the keys of songs.
Another aspect could be how long the song is or if there are sections that are similar/repeat. It can also be determined with how well one knows the song already (to sing it or play with another instrument). Same with the rhythm/timing of a song.
We can also gauge this according to how it’s going for us as we learn. Is it progressing steadily, are we getting stuck often, etc.
Another good way to get a feel for song difficulty is to look at the ‘Tune Finder’ page. This shows a general list of songs and includes whether they are considered beginner/Intermediate/Advanced.

        TuneFinder

        Thanks for reaching out 🙂
