@jasonkleinberg Is it best to learn and practice with an acoustic violin or an electric violin? Although my wife tolerates the fiddle noise both cats run for cover when I play the acoustic violin. My electric violin is great for silent practice using my Boss headset amplifier but my concern is that I may not be learning how to play the acoustic fiddle properly to jam with the Bluegrass folks at bluegrass festivals. Will learning with an electric fiddle for silent practice session impair the development of my acoustic playing skills when jamming with others playing Bluegrass?
This could be a great post to share with the broader FiddleHed community as I feel a number of people have experience with this.
I personally do not regularly play with an electric violin so I can’t speak to that element.
I could see the benefit of getting more experience, familiarity and comfortability with the acoustic, especially since it sounds like you intend to play with it in various settings. I often will use earplugs for myself, to help mitigate hearing damage from the loudness of the instrument
I will also often close a door to a room and put a cloth at the bottom of the door to manage sound volumes for those around me (my family enjoys hearing me play dampened and from a distance :), especially when I’m really going for it ).
Another option is a mute for the vioin. Many mute options. This can be helpful to play closer to others and also not wear earplugs. Good to play the mute sometimes, and also without it as it changes the quality of sound produced.
