How do I know if I’m developing a bad habit? For example, on a couple of songs, if there’s a “side by side” scale and I’m going down the melody like D3-D2-D1, I find I’m holding down all three at the same time and just lifting each finger up. It kinda
happened without me thinking about it but is it a bad habit and will it slow me down in songs I’m learning in the future?

    • That’s a great question, Tammy. If something feels off or not good, that’s a good indicator to see what’s going on and find a way to adjust/change to help it feel right. Always good to reach out to folks around you, especially people who also play the same instrument and get their opinion.
Holding fingers down on fingerboard can be a good thing, as long as they aren’t making it harder for you or interfering with playing a note. In general, it helps to keep fingers on strings when you don’t need them up in the air as this can save energy and the time it takes to move them back into place. Having fingers lifted in the air if they don’t need to be can make playing faster harder.
This is a good one to address together at the beginner session today. Hope you can make it.
