Playing an online duet with Jong Madaliday

Super fun to play some back up fiddle with this amazing singer named @jongmadaliday from the Philippines who I found on TikTok ๐Ÿ˜ป. Iโ€™m kind of a noob at this, so still totally amazed that with a little bit of effort I was able to collaborate with somebody on the other side of the planet.

I’ll go into detail about how I approached this below the video…

How I arranged the backup part and solo

I played simple chords in the beginning, trying to take a backseat to his voice. The progression is:

C | D | Em | Em

For the solo, I tried to follow his line but add double stops. At the end of the solo I added a triplet fill using the 1-2-1 melodic variation pattern. Learn more on that:

And then for the really beautiful singing part that he ends with, I used a bowing technique call tremolo. I tried to add a subtle layer of emotion with this. I wish I could have mixed this part a little lower because I think it competed too much with his singing (which is lovely).

My goal with playing on songs is to just make the song better. Sometimes that means not playing at all…

I am new to TikTok and so it took awhile to get the microphone and headphones set properly. I am looking for a way to close mic the fiddle and then record directly to my phone. Once the setup is right, expect more collaborations and lessons like this. I also want to dial this in so I can show you guys how to do it too. Then you can create your own one-minute duets, trios, and fiddle symphonies ๐ŸŽถ
