This is a Guided Fiddle Practice โ€“ a follow-along session designed for you to practice with me in real time, rather than a traditional lesson that explains a skill or tune.

๐Ÿ“… Session Length: 20 minutes

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Benefits:

  • Improve string crossing accuracy
  • Enhance finger coordination

Letโ€™s practice! ๐ŸŽถ

๐ŸŽผ Step-by-Step Guided Practice

1. Warm-Up & Bow Control (5 min)

Stop n’ Rock Exercise

  • Slow, deliberate string changes with a full stop after each stroke (staccato).
  • This improves precision and control.

Open String Exercises

  • D0-A0
  • G0-D0
  • A0-E0

๐Ÿšจ Key Tip: Beginners often rush this. Leave enough space for clean bow rocking. As you improve, you’ll need less space and time for the crossing.

๐ŸŽถ Variations & Rhythms

  • Two Quarter Notes
  • Long Bows
  • Hoedown or triplets Rhythm

๐Ÿ’ก Once you understand the routine, add your own variations!

๐ŸŽป 2. String Crossing with Fingered Notes (5 min)

๐ŸŽฏ First Finger Patterns

  • Hold first finger down while playing the adjacent open string.
  • Start slowly with Stop n’ Rock.

๐Ÿ”น Exercises

  • D1-A0 (with A drone)
  • G1-D0 (with D drone)
  • A1-E0 (with E drone)

โžก๏ธ Once clean, transition to continuous flow.

๐ŸŽผ Ascending & Descending Arpeggios (3 min)

  • D Major Arpeggio: D0-2-A0-3 (Add D drone)
  • G Major Arpeggio: G0-2-D0-3 (Add G drone)
  • A Major Arpeggio: A0-2-E0-3 (Add A drone)

๐ŸŽฏ Start slow, then gradually increase speed!

๐ŸŽฏ 3. Coordination Patterns for Precision (5 min)

๐ŸŽป Pedal Pattern 1 โ€“ A String Anchor

  • D0-A0-D1-A0-D2-A0-D3-A0 (Add D drone)
  • Keep the A string ringing while crossing.
  • Try the same pattern on:
    • G & D strings
    • A & E strings

๐ŸŽฌ Watch the demo!

๐ŸŽผ Transposing Intervals

  • G0-1 โ†’ D0-1 โ†’ A0-1 โ†’ E0-1
  • Focus on quick, clean articulation.

๐ŸŽป Single String Exercises

On your own! Choose exercises relevant to your skill level. Then practiceย transposing intervals on all four strings:

  • 1-2
  • 0-2
  • 1-3
  • 0-3
  • 1-L2
  • 0-L2
  • L2-3
  • 0-L1
  • 2-H3

๐ŸŽต 4. Tune-Based String Crossing (5 min)

Now, letโ€™s apply Stop n’ Rock to small tune chunks.

๐Ÿ”น Start with Stop n’ Rock โ†’ Transition to Flow (No Staccato).

๐ŸŽถ Mary Had a Little Lamb

Basic phrase: D2-1-0-1-2-2-2
Pedal Pattern Application:
D2-A0-D1-A0-D0-A0-D1-A0-D2-A0-D2-A0-D2-A0-D2-A0

๐ŸŽป Swallowtail Jig โ€“ A Part (First Quarter)

Warm-up: D1-A1
Chunk: D3-1-1-A1-D1-1

๐ŸŽผ Harvest Home โ€“ A Part (First Bar)

D0-A0-D2-A0

๐ŸŽฏ Slow it down and exaggerate clean string changes before speeding up.

Tips

Adapt the routine to your skill level.

Practice with a metronome for consistency. Start at 45 BPM โ†’ Increase to max speed

Pro Tip: Record yourself playing for 1 minute or less to track progress.

  1. I enjoyed this workshop. I am a low intermediate player I’d say, but these basic skills are great practice in improving sound and intonation. Will these guided practice sessions be archived somewhere on the Fiddlehed site. Thank you! And welcome to Sonny! It’s good to have some happy news!
