I know when sheet music shows the line connecting the two notes, it is indicating a slur. Is that the only time we should use them, or should we use them whenever we can or whenever it makes sense? Are there examples of where they should and should not be used?

Thought I’d go through the forum and see what’s to talk about! Here’s my take on slurs. Unless it’s definitely written in, I try to learn a piece without adding slurs. Then when I have a handle on the tune, I will decide where I want to put any slurs in, purposefully. Like when I think it sounds good, or especially to make my bow pointed the right direction for an important note or rhythmic beat. I think if one gets used to slurring notes in the process of learning a tune, especially for beginners, it can sound sloppy. And that multiplies when one tries to get some speed early in the process.
