      Hi all,
Have any of you had any luck hosting a circle jam at your house? Or know someone who has? Obviously, it’s by invite only, but how do you start it up? Is food expected? Pot luck? Bring your own chairs? Outdoors? Indoors? If outdoors, how do you compensate for heat/cold; bugs/neighbors, etc? I would love to hear from someone who’s had experience in this sort of thing!

I think it’s totally up to you or whoever is taking the lead with the group. I’ve been around a group that requires excessive amounts of hard alcohol and around folks who just show for the music time. I’ve been to a person’s home and seen them hosted at a bar or coffee shop or restaurant or a campground/park. They are doing one here at a park by the river and everyone does their own thing: picnic, etc. At the river they often have a signature group that plays a show and afterwards small groups form all over to jam. Check out the fiddle festivals. They are places where folks just walk around the grounds and gather and jam.

The jams I have attended have all been different. Start simple and let it morph into the best for your situation. Just start. The one thing that has been common has been the amount of time, this is particularly true if at someones home. If they say 7-9pm they would like you to leave at 9 not 10.

Most important, play music and have fun.
