introduction to bowing

here’s a beginner’s guide to bowing the fiddle.

we’ll spend some time learning how to place the bow in the right hand, curving the fingers so the tips point down and the knuckles point up.

then we’ll start by playing some short notes on the D string. Little short notes are maybe the easiest thing to play.

then we’ll learn some simple rhythms:
-tucka (4 shorts 2 longs)
-hoedown (long short short)
-triplets (1-2-3)

a good way to imrpove your sound is throw-away bow.

we’ll also practice rocking the bow across the strings without playing. this will hep us to play on just one string and pave the way for the next bowing lesson on string crossing.
