introduction to fingering, lesson 1

in this video i’ll show you the easiest way to start fingering the fiddle with your left hand. we’ll hold the fiddle like a guitar and pluck with the right thumb.

i recommend first starting with the introduction to bowing lesson.

some exercises you’ll learn from this lesson:
D0-1 (open D to first finger)
D1-2
D2-3
D0-1-2-3-3-2-1-0

adding fiddle rhythms to the finger patterns above: double notes, hoedown, tucka, triplets, long-short and single notes. you can do these things on all four strings.

try using a tuning app to check your tuning. i have one called cleartune. but be careful: don't stare at it while you play. just use it to find your notes before you start.

we’ll learn a simple tune called “bile ‘em cabbage down”
1st quarter: D2-2-2-2-3-3
2nd quarter: D2-2-2-2-1-1
3rd quarter: D2-2-2-2-3-3
4th quarter: D2-2-1-1-0-0

then you can try to hold the violin in standard position and try to pluck everything that way. it will prepare you for fingering and bowing.
